Let me tell you about my most relaxing day on Easter Island. About a 15-minute walk away from the Tupa Hotel, Pea Beach was known for its relaxed waters, which were regulated by a semi-wall of rocks. In addition to its relatively calm waters, Pea Beach is known to inhabit local sea turtles! After hearing this fact from a local I met on my way to the market, I was determined to experience this beach for myself.
I had to ask multiple people for directions, as my internal compass is evidently quite ineffective, but I eventually arrived back to the coast and walked down the stone steps towards Pea Beach. This was the furthest thing from a sandy beach, but once I managed to lower myself from the wet stone and into the water, I immediately understood all the hype. The water was nice and cool, perfect for the bright sunlight and intense heat on the island. First, I sat there in the shallows as I adjusted myself to the water’s temperature. I then heard the gasps of a couple of excited children not too far away from me. Their parents were pointing to something in the water, and so I also turned my gaze to their direction. Because I couldn’t see properly from where I was, I decided to swim closer to see what all the excitement was about.
It was a sea turtle! There it was, just swimming around and almost brushing our legs with its limbs. A local that was relaxing in a corner of the beach found some seaweed and handed it to the children, and then gave some to me as well so we could feed the turtle. I let the children go first, as they seemed ecstatic at the thought of getting close to the sea turtle. Once the children had their fun, I approached the area where the sea turtle was swimming. I put the seaweed in the water where it could see, luring it closer to the surface so that I could see its face as it enjoyed the seaweed hanging from my hand. Getting to see its little head poke out if the water was absolutely the highlight of my day. Once the sun had set and I had to leave, I hurried back to the Tupa Hotel so I could tell everyone about my close encounter with a sea turtle.
